Unit History

On June 15, 1863, with Robert E. Lee moving into Maryland, President Lincoln issued a proclamation calling for troops for the temporary emergency.  In response to this call, the 2nd Maryland Regiment of Cavalry was organized in Baltimore and annapolis from July 1, 1863 to August 19, 1863.  A total of five companies were raised, with a six month term of enlistment.

Company a., B. & e. were recruited from Baltimore City.  Company C. from Howard County and Baltimore City.  Company D. was recruited from Washington, D.C.

After completing it's organization, Captain William F. Bragg moved the regiment to Annapolis, where it was assigned to various provost duties throughout southern Maryland, primarily in Anne Arundel and Calvert Counties, while one company remained in the state capitol.

Company A. & B. mustered out on January 26, 1864.  Company C. & D. on February 6, 1864.  Company E. on January 31, 1864.  Prior to the term of their enlistment, seventy men re-enlisted for three years and were assigned to the 3rd Maryland Cavalry.  Several others re-enlisted into Cole's Independent Cavalry.

Thirteen men of the 2nd Maryland died of disease during their six months of service.
