Unit History

Organized for one year in early June 1861.
Transferred to Confederate service on July 1, 1861.
Companies G and H captured at Rich Mountain on July 11, 1861.
Both compnies later mistakenly disbanded while on parole.
Companies A, B, C, D, and E disbanded on September 10, 1861, per S.O. #270, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, dated September 5, 1861.
Company F became Company A, 57th Infantry Regiment, on September 23, 1861, per S.O. #285, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office.
Remaining two companies of the regiment (I and K) slated to become part of the 4th Infantry Battalion, along with several Georgia companies, per S.O. #236, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, dated November 23, 1861.
However, the battalion failed to complete its organization and the order was revoked on December 10, 1861, per S.O. #262, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office.
Companies I and K assigned to the 46th Infantry Regiment as Companies D and F, respectively, from May 9 to September 24, 1862.
Companies I and K again served as part of the 20th Infantry Regiment until October 27, 1862, when they became Companies B and C, respectively, 59th Infantry Regiment, per S.O. #244, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office., dated October 18, 1862.
