Organized at Harpers Ferry in May 1861 from four companies of the 4th Infantry Regiment Volunteers (Militia) and other companies organized for one year.
Transferred to Confederate service on July 1, 1861.
The 1st Company C was disbanded on April 18, 1862.
Company L was assigned to this regiment on April 19, 1862.
The 2nd Company C was assigned to this regiment on April 23, 1862.
Served in a field consolidation with the 23rd and 37th Infantry Regiments from May 1864 to April 1865.
Surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
