Organized with four companies at Richmond from the employees of the Tredegar Iron Works for the local defense as needed in May 1861.
Designated as the 8th Infantry Battalion by Governor Letcher on June 3, 1861.
Reorganized with three companies in 1863.
Mustered into Confederate service on October 16, 1863, for the term of "Residence in Richmond."
Consolidated with the 2nd Infantry Battalion, Local Defense Troops, and redesignated as the 2nd Infantry Regiment, Local Defense Troops, on September 2, 1864, per S.O. #208, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office.
