Organized with seven companies at Richmond for local defense as needed on June 29, 1863.
The 1st Company G mustered out on December 28, 1863.
The 2nd Company G organized on July 27, 1864.
Company H organized on February 19, 1864.
Company I organized on October 3, 1864, and later assigned to this battalion.
Having been increased to a regiment, the battalion was redesignated as the 3rd Infantry Regiment, Local Defense Troops, on September 23, 1864, per S.O. #226, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office.
