Organized in the spring of 1861 for one year in state service and eventually comprised 29 companies.
Transferred to Confederate service on July 1, 1861.
Ten companies became the 12th Cavalry Regiment on June 21, 1862.
Seven companies became the 17th Cavalry Battalion on June 21, 1862.
One company was ordered to report to Maj. Gen. William W. Loring on June 25, 1862, per S.O. #146, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, and finally became Company G, 14th Cavalry Regiment, per S.O. #208, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, dated September 5, 1862.
One company became the Ashby Horse Artillery in June 1862.
Surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
