Organized for one year with 12 companies completed on July 16, 1861.
Company N, a Mississippi company, assigned on August 31, 1861.
1st Companies D and K became Companies D and C, 6th Cavalry Regiment, respectively, on September 12, 1861, per S.O. #276, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office.
Company O, an Alabama company, assigned on October 19, 1861.
Companies N and O became Companies A and D, 2nd Mississippi Cavalry Battalion, respectively, on October 24, 1861, per S.O. #188, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office.
Regiment reorganized on April 23, 1862.
A cavalry company unofficially attached to the 26th Infantry Regiment became 2nd Company L at this time.
2nd Company L became Company A, 5th Cavalry Regiment, on June 25, 1862, per S.O. #146, Adjutant and Inspector General's Office.
Surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
