Unit History

Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in the Amherst Virginia Artillery Battery (The National Archives): View, Print Copy & Save Original Compiled service records of Confederate soldiers of the Amherst Virginia Artillery Battery, labeled with each soldier's name, rank, and unit, with links to revealing documents about each soldier.

Organized for one year in Amherst County on July 24, 1861. Reorganized on May 15, 1862.
Armed with two 12-lb. Howitzers and four 6-lb. Smoothbores on September 17-20, 1862.
Hanover and Middlesex Artillery Batteries disbanded and some of the men transferred to this battery on October 4, 1862, per S.O. #209, Headquarters, Army of Northern Virginia.
Armed with three 12-lb. Napoleans on July 1-3, 1863. Armed with two 12-lb. Napoleans and one 3-inch Rifle on December 28, 1864. No record after March 1865.
